Families in grief after thousands of farmers commit suicide

Ludhiana (Punjab), Dec 30 (ANI): Thousands of farmers have committed suicide in Punjab over the last 16 years, data of a survey conducted by three state-run varsities revealed on Saturday. The survey was conducted jointly by Punjab Agricultural University (PAU), Punjabi University and Guru Nanak Dev University- all based in the state popularly known as 'Granary of India'.

Thousands of farmers kill themselves every year over failed crops and mounting debt. The most common reason cited is the inability to repay loans for seeds and fertilisers.

According to official data, more than half of India's farming households are in debt, owing banks and moneylenders hundreds of millions of rupees, despite loan write-offs by governments.
