Flood situation continues to be grim in Assam

Dhubri, August 25 (ANI): The flood situation in Assam remained grim on Tuesday as death toll rose to 14. Around 150,000 people have sought shelter in the 150 camps set up by the state government.

The challenges are substantially higher as nearly 600,000 people have been affected by floods. The worst affected districts of the state are Dhemaji, Lakhimpur, Kokrajhar, Bongaigaon, Chirang, Barpeta, Jorhat, Baska, Sonitpur and Dibrugarh.

Dhubri was suffering the most, with over 380,000 flood-affected people, followed by Bongaigaon with more than 140,000 distressed people. Floods have disrupted normal life as residents were forced to wade through neck-deep water to reach their destination.

Hundred of villagers were stranded in their houses as there were no boats to ferry them to safer places. The main Brahmaputra river had been flowing above the danger mark in several areas, flooding large swaths of land near its banks.
