Germany optimistic about greater ties with India, says envoy

New Delhi, Sep 04 (ANI): Berlin is interested in becoming a "full partner" of New Delhi in tackling its challenges, newly-appointed German envoy to India, Martin Ney said. Ney, who recently replaced Michael Steiner, said that a slew of agreements were to be signed between the two countries.

German Chancellor Angela Merkel and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi are scheduled to meet in New Delhi for Intergovernmental Consultations (IGC) later this year. Ney added that Germany was committed to co-operate with India in its fight against Islamic State.

India and Germany have had a strategic partnership since 2001; two rounds of IGCs have taken place in New Delhi in May 2011 and in Berlin in April 2013. The two countries also have institutionalised arrangements to deliberate on bilateral and global issues of interest like the Strategic Dialogue, Foreign Office Consultations, Joint Commission on Industrial and Economic Cooperation and the High Defence Committee among others.
