GST hits kite market ahead of International Kite Festival 'Uttarayan', sales decline

Surat (Gujarat), Dec 28 (ANI): Ahead of Gujarat's reknown festival of kites, "Uttarayan", shopkeepers have started their preparations by decorating their shops with different types of attractive kites. This year's special editions are the ones representing the recent polls in the state as kites with photos of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Congress President Rahul Gandhi filled most of the shops in the market.

However, this year's "Uttarayan" is facing a lot of heat due to the introduction of GST as the threads with which the kites fly are comparatively expensive this year. The price hike of the kites has impacted the sale and thus the market which used to be packed to the rafters with buyers seemed empty this year.

Uttarayan will be celebrated on the second week of January. It is regarded as one of the biggest festivals celebrated in the country.
