GST tests mettle of Jaipur sculptors

Jaipur (Rajasthan), July 28 (ANI): Marble sculptors and traders in Jaipur are staring at job loss after the implementation of the Goods and Services Tax (GST), the country's greatest tax reform. Though statues of religious deities are exempted from the new levy, it is the tax of 28 percent on marbel chisels that has raised concerns among the sculptors.

Idol-makers rue that the GST on marble was eating into their businesses with the demand for sculptures witnessing a sharp decline after the implementation of new levy. The long-awaited GST, which came into effect on July 1, has been hailed as India's biggest tax overhaul since independence in 1947.
