Harvest festival revelry continues in Kerala

Kochi, August 26 (ANI): People in Kerala danced, beat drums and played various sports as part of celebrations for the 10-day Onam or harvest festival. Many public and private organisations are celebrating the ongoing harvest festival in their unique manner.

In Kochi city, civic body Greater Cochin Development Authority organised a sports festival where children and adults indulged in indoor and outdoor sports activities. The children were dressed in animal costumes as they danced, played tug of war and got pictures clicked.

People also made floral designs on floor, called 'Onappookalam' as part of the cultural activities. The celebrations for Onam start on Atham day, ten days before Thiruvonam, which is the most important day of Onam.

This year Thiruvonam will fall on August 28. Onam is celebrated in the honour of King Mahabali under whom the state had witnessed its golden period.

It is said that Mahabali visits Kerala during these ten days.
