Health ministry calls for calm amid mounting dengue cases

New Delhi, Sep 09 (ANI): The health ministry urged the residents of New Delhi to not panic and exercise precautions to stay protected as dengue cases continue to rise. According to the ministry, 1,259 dengue cases were reported in Delhi alone till Saturday (September 05) while two people have succumbed to the vector borne disease.

Dengue is caused by the bite of female mosquitoes and causes fever and a fall in the platelet count. It is also called "breakbone fever" because of the severe pain it can cause.

Director General, Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS), Jagdish Prasad, said people should take care to prevent water collection around their houses. Prasad added the federal government was mulling over banning the rapid kits used for dengue diagnosis since they further add to the panic by giving false results.
