Jain community hits the streets against ban on fasting unto death

Surat/ Jaipur/ Raipur/ Moradabad, Aug 24 (ANI): Members of the Jain community took out peaceful rallies in various parts of the country on Monday (August 24) in protest of a court order banning their practice of fasting unto death. The protest call was given by 'Dharma Bachao Andolan Samiti' which represents all Jain sects.

The committee has requested the community to boycott offices and schools on Monday. On August 10, Rajasthan High Court ruled, "Santhara is illegal in the eyes of law.

If anybody goes for Santhara on account of religion can be treated as suicide and a case should be lodged as per the law." Protest rallies were held in Surat city of Gujarat and the capital cities of Rajasthan and Chhattisgarh, requesting President to intervene in the matter. The protesters said that their religious sentiments were hurt by the court's order.
