Janmashtami 2017: 'Dahi Handi' celebration with patriotic flavour in Maharashtra

Thane/Mumbai (Maharashtra), Aug 15 (ANI): After celebrating the 70th Independence Day, a sea of people thronged different venues of Maharashtra to participate in the 'Dahi Handi' Festival on the occasion of Janmashtami, marking the birth of Lord Krishna. On this auspicious day, a bunch of Govindas try to chase and break the Handi filled with butter by making massive human pyramids.

According to the Hindu calendar, Lord Krishna was born on the eighth day of Shravan month. This day is celebrated in many different ways.

Devotees throng temples and prepare a cradle of flowers in which a small miniature of Lord Krishna is placed while others cut a cucumber which signifies a mother's womb and celebrate the god's birth. The devotees celebrate this day with zeal and enthusiasm.

In Maharashtra, people in many places put Handis' with price money for the Govindas' who try to break it to remember the childhood of Lord Krishna.
