One-horned rhino poached in Kaziranga national park

Kaziranga, Sep 06 (ANI): Forest officials of Kaziranga National Park (KNP) in Assam state recovered the carcass of a rhinoceros with its horn removed. Officials suspected that poachers shot dead the rhino and fled with its horn.

The national park, popular for its one-horned rhinos, has been submerged in flood waters since the last week of August following heavy rainfall. The carcass was recovered from near Baghmari forest camp under Bagori forest range of the national park.

Every year during floods, animals move to high land areas and become easy target for poachers. Poaching continues unabated in the national park despite the measures taken by the KNP authorities.

Three poachers were killed in an encounter with forest guards in the last week of August.
