Onset of monsoon paves way for rice cultivation in northeast region

Nagaland, July 23 (ANI): Taking an advantage of the wide variety or rare and exotic flora and fauna, India's northeast region's economy growth is hugely depending on agriculture sector. As the region is mostly covered with evergreen forest, large scales of areas are plotted for rice, millets, maize and pulses cultivation through terrace cultivation and shifting cultivation.

However, rice is the main crop in the Northeastern states covering around 61 percent of gross cropped area. With the advent of the monsoon season, paddy sowing has begun in the region.

Farmers in the landlocked state of Nagaland have also begun sowing in the fields. Daily wagers and labourers are toiling hands in the fields, ploughing and seeding, as June, July and August demands intensive labour.

Similarly, farmers in the hilly areas of Manipur have also initiated paddy sowing. Being the staple diet of the people, rice plantation is considered holy and significant in Manipur.
