Own a dog to reduce risk of death and cardiovascular disease

New Delhi, Nov 18 (ANI): Dog owners have lower mortality, according to a new Swedish study published in the journal Scientific Reports. The study has found that dog ownership is associated with a reduced risk for cardiovascular disease and death.

People living alone can decrease their risk of death by 33 % by owning a dog. Their risk of cardiovascular related death reduces by 36% as compared to individuals living alone without a pet.

Though to a lesser extent, multi-person household owners also saw benefits. Risk of death among these dog owners was reduced by 11% and their chances of cardiovascular death were 15% lower.

However, their risk of a heart attack was not lowered by owning a dog. The study observed over 3.4 million Swedish individuals between the ages of 40 and 80.

They were sampled from a national database and the Swedish Twin Register over a 12-year study period.
