Police arrest five Maoists in Sarguja district of Chhattisgarh

Sarguja, Sep 07 (ANI): Security forces arrested five Maoists during an encounter and recovered five rifles, cartridges and some documents from them in Chhattisgarh on Monday. The encounter took place in Sarguja district on Monday morning and went on for about half an hour.

The encounter between security personnel and Maoists took place when they were conducting a search operation and around 12 Maoists opened fire at them. However, only five were arrested and the rest managed to flee.

The Maoists, also known as 'Naxals' in India, seek the violent overthrow of the Indian state and have fought authorities for decades, particularly in rural areas of central and eastern India where they enjoy some support. Maoists say they are fighting to give poor farmers and landless labourers control over their land and a greater claim on mineral wealth exploited by mining companies.
