Residents celebrate Christmas amid economic blockade

Imphal, Manipur, Dec 25 (ANI): Residents of Imphal in Manipur state celebrated Christmas on Sunday amid an economic blockade imposed by an influential tribal organisation for over 50 days. The United Naga Council (UNC), which has been campaigning for the rights of the minority Naga tribes of Manipur province, has blocked the landlocked state's two main national highways since November 1 in protest against the state government's move to create seven more districts.

The situation deteriorated last week when people residing in the plains went on a rampage, burning several buses and destroying public property, and forcing the state government to impose a curfew. People thronged churches on Sunday (December 25) to celebrate Christmas as curfew was relaxed in parts of northeastern Indian city of Imphal.
