Shutdown in Kashmir to protest civilian killings

Srinagar (J and K), Mar 05 (ANI): Separatists on Monday called for a shutdown in Kashmir over killing of three civilians in alleged firing by security forces. Reportedly, the youth were killed in Shopian district on Sunday in the cross-firing between militants and Indian Army.

The firing ensued after the army signaled a car to stop at a check post and militants inside opened fire. The Joint Resistance Leadership (JRL), a grouping of separatist leaders, issued a statement terming the killings "gruesome." Security was beefed up across the summer capital of Srinagar and restrictions imposed in several areas to prevent any untoward incidents.

Markets remained shut and vehicles largely stayed off the roads with residents choosing to stay indoors.
