Thirty infants die in five days in state-run hospital in Cuttack

Cuttack, August 26 (ANI): Two infants died at a state-run hospital in Odisha's Cuttack district on Tuesday, taking the toll of infant deaths at the premier health care centre to 30 in the past few days. The deaths have created furore in the state, forcing the government to order an enquiry against Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel Post Graduate Institute of Pediatrics (SVPPGIP), also known as Sishu Bhawan.

While the families of the deceased infants have accused the medical staff of negligence, people undergoing treatment at the hospital are too unhappy with the management. However, the hospital authorities have refuted the allegations.

Opposition parties are up in the arms against ruling Biju Janata Dal government over the matter. Members of Congress and Bharatiya Janata Party held demonstrations at the hospital on Wednesady in protest of the infant deaths.
