TMC holds protest over National Register of Citizens issue in Assam

New Delhi, Jan 04 (ANI): The Trinamool Congress (TMC) leaders are holding protest in front of Gandhi statue in Parliament over National Register of Citizens (NRC) issue in Assam. The leaders said earlier when NCR was issued it had fallouts in West Bengal as well.

This time they are trying to get attention of the entire nation and government so that the same situation can be avoided. West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee had yesterday warned of trouble if Bengalis are "chased out" of Assam.

The National Register of Citizens (NRC) is the register containing names of legal citizens. The much-awaited first draft of the NRC was published on 31st December 2017.

About 1.9 crore of the 3.29 crore Assam residents have been tagged as 'legal', while the rest await further verification.
