Villagers in Odisha leave their homes due to threat from Maoists

Malkangiri, Sep 13 (ANI): The residents of a tribal village in Odisha have been forced to leave their homes following death threats from Maoists. Around 15 tribal families are leaving the Bonda Ghati (abode of Bonda people, a primitive tribe) in Malkangiri district along with all their belongings and cattle after receiving threats from the Maoist rebels over the past few days.

Also known as Naxals, the rebels have fought for decades in a swathe of central and eastern India, including many resource-rich regions, where tension runs high between poor farmers and industrial developers. Maoists have killed police personnel and politicians and targeted government buildings and railway tracks in insurgent acts, killing thousands since the 1960s.

Meanwhile, police said temporary food and lodging arrangements have been made for the people who left their homes.
