Volunteers launch campaign to protect people from deadly kite strings

Surat, Jan 11 (ANI): Residents in Surat launched a campaign to educate people about safeguarding themselves against glass-coated kite strings in the run up to the 'Makar Sankranti'.The awareness campaign was led by the family of a man who died after his throat was slit by a kite string. The volunteers stood on roads, stopping commuters to tie protective scarves around their necks.

Kite flyers compete to bring down each other's kites in the run up to 'Makar Sankranti', celebrated every year on January 14. The near-invisible glass-coated strings often inflict fatal injuries as kites fall down or dangle from trees and wires.
