Woman sentenced to 2.5 years over encouraging her boyfriend to commit suicide

Boston (U.S.), 4 Aug (ANI): A woman named Michelle Carter was sentenced to two-and-half year by the Bristol County Juvenile Court over goading her 18-year-old boyfriend into suicide with a series of text messages in 2014. 21-year-old Carter was found guilty in June this year of involuntary manslaughter for urging her boyfriend named Conrad Roy to kill himself in a parking lot.

A one of a kind case has marked the first time in the state in which a person had been found guilty of manslaughter only for words. This case was handed down by Bristol County Juvenile Court Judge Lawrence Moniz after Carter opted against a jury trial.

The case trial has unearthed the dangers of cyber bullying and raised concerns among civil liberties advocates who argued that prosecutors and the judge overreached by finding Carter guilty for her speech.
