A M Naik stepped down as the chairman of L&T Group on Saturday.
He handed over the reins of the USD 23 billion conglomerate to S N Subrahmanyan at an event in Mumbai.
Naik, 81, will now be the chairman of the employees trust. He will focus on increasing many philanthropic initiatives that he has been undertaking for the past few years, according to a statement.
India Post unveiled a postage stamp on Naik on the occasion.
Naik's attention going forward will be on his philanthropic initiatives, including the Naik Charitable Trust which focuses on education and skill-building of the underprivileged, and the Nirali Memorial Medical Trust dedicated to facilitating super speciality healthcare at subsidised cost.
Naik joined the company in 1965 as a junior engineer and went on to become its Group Chairman.
In the nearly three decades in leadership roles, Naik helped the company grow to its present size and stature, the statement said.

The Odisha government on Saturday approved 19 investment projects worth Rs 3,663 crore.

The Indian Railway is introducing the '14 minutes of miracle' concept for speedy cleaning of trains from October 1, starting with 29 Vande Bharat trains at their respective destination stations across the country.
It will be formally launched by the Railway Ministry Ashwini Vaishnaw at the Delhi Cantt. Railway Station.
Vaishnaw told reporters that the Vande Bharat trains will be cleaned within 14 minutes under the initiative to improve their punctuality and turnaround time.
It is a unique concept and happening for the first time in the Indian railways, the minister said.
The initiative is based on the concept of '7 minutes of miracle' at various stations such as Osaka, Tokyo, etc. in Japan where bullet trains are cleaned and made ready for another journey within seven minutes.

A parliamentary panel on Tuesday interacted with a group of experts to seek their views on the three bills which seek to replace the Indian Penal Code, Code of Criminal Procedure and the Evidence Act.
The Standing Committee on Home plans clause-wise deliberations on the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), Bharatiya Sakshya Bill (BS), and Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita over the next two days.
In its meeting on Tuesday, the panel heard Priyank Kanoongo, chairperson of the National Commission For Protection Of Child Rights (NCPCR), and other experts.
While introducing the bills in the Lok Sabha during the Monsoon session, Home Minister Amit Shah had urged the Chair to refer the three bills to the standing committee for wider consultation and discussion.
In August, the committee was given three months to examine the three bills which form the backbone of Indian criminal jurisprudence.

Vedanta on Tuesday said that its total aluminium production increased by two per cent to 5,94,000 tonnes in the second quarter of the ongoing fiscal.
The company's total aluminium output in the July-September period of the  last fiscal was 5,84,000 tonnes, Vedanta said in a filing to BSE.
The mined metal output at Zinc India was marginally down to 2,52,000 tonnes, over 2,55,000 tonnes in the year-ago period.
At Zinc International, the company's total mined metal output was down by 10 per cent to 66,000 tonnes, over 74,000 tonnes.
The company's "overall production at 66 kt, (was) lower by 10 per cent YoY and 3 per cent QoQ largely due to lower tonnes treated", it said.
The company further said that its saleable steel production increased 17 per cent Y-o-Y to 3,78,000 tonnes on account of improved operational efficiency and higher production capacity post debottlenecking carried out in FY23.

Despite heavy rains lashing several parts of Kerala in the last few days, the state is still deficient in monsoon rainfall, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has said.
Kerala received 34 per cent deficient rainfall during the south-west monsoon this year while the country as a whole got six per cent deficit rains.
As the south-west monsoon is now in the withdrawal phase, the rains are expected to reduce from Wednesday, October 4, onwards, IMD sources said.
The heavy rains which lashed many parts of Kerala on Tuesday were due to the low pressure system over Jharkhand, they said and added that the withdrawal of the monsoon was complete in three to four states of north-west India.
"The conditions are favourable for the withdrawal of the south-west monsoons. The rains will reduce from tomorrow," K Santhosh, director of the Regional Meteorological Centre, Trivandrum told PTI.
He said Lakshadweep received a 15 per cent deficit rainfall but that is considered normal.

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau on Tuesday said Canada was not looking to "escalate" the situation with India amid the diplomatic row between the two countries over the killing of a Khalistani separatist and asserted that his government will continue to have "constructive relations" with New Delhi.
