The Reserve Bank's announcement of withdrawal of Rs 2,000 currency notes has come as a setback for Naxalites as their funds collected by way of extortion are mainly in this denomination, a senior police official in Maharashtra claimed on Tuesday.
The police in the Naxal-affected Gadchiroli district are on alert as Naxalites have become active to exchange the Rs 2,000 notes lying with them, he said.
Notably, two persons were last Thursday arrested in Bijapur district of neighbouring Chhattisgarh with Rs 6 lakh in Rs 2,000 currency notes allegedly belonging to a Naxalite commander, as per the police.
The Reserve Bank of India recently announced the withdrawal of Rs 2,000 notes from circulation and asked people to deposit them in banks or get them exchanged till September 30.
Speaking to PTI, Deputy Inspector General, Gadchiroli range, Sandip Patil said the withdrawal of Rs 2,000 notes is a "setback" for Naxalites as the money extorted by them from contractors of tendu leaves and PWD

The Congress has projected unity to take on the BJP in the assembly polls in Rajasthan but "core issues" between Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot and his bete noire Sachin Pilot remain unresolved, according to sources close to Pilot.
The Congress on Monday said the two leaders have agreed to the party's "proposal" and will fight the upcoming assembly elections unitedly, having left all issues to be resolved by the high command.
However, the sources said Monday's meeting of Gehlot and Pilot with party chief Mallikarjun Kharge and Rahul Gandhi did not result in any resolution of the "core issues" between the two Rajasthan bigwigs.
They also said Kharge and Rahul Gandhi first met Gehlot for two hours and then met Pilot separately after which all the leaders posed together for photographs at Kharge's residence. Interestingly, despite the meeting being held in the same house, the leadership held discussions with Gehlot and Pilot separately.

One cannot malign judicial officers by using social media, the Supreme Court observed on Tuesday while dismissing a plea challenging a Madhya Pradesh High Court order that sentenced a man to 10 days in jail for making corruption allegations against a district judge.
A vacation bench of Justice Bela M Trivedi and Justice Prashant Kumar Mishra said it was not inclined to interfere in the matter.
"Just because you don't get a favourable order doesn't mean that you will malign the judicial officer. Independence of (the) judiciary doesn't just mean independence from (the) executive but also from outside forces. This has to be a lesson for others also.
"He should have thought twice before casting any aspersion on the judicial officer. He maligned the judicial officer. Think of the damage done to the judicial officer's image," Justice Trivedi observed orally.
The counsel appearing for the petitioner sought leniency from the Supreme Court and said the imprisonment order was excessive.

Tagging the media report, Congress general secretary Jairam Ramesh said, "This is now a familiar pattern: two offshore Adani-linked funds appear to have been on the radar of Indian tax authorities since at least 2014, with no action evident other than one or two routine notices for information."
