Shiv Sena leader Uday Samant on Friday said deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde did not want to join the new Maharashtra government and instead wanted to focus on building his party.
But the Shiv Sena chief, who served as chief minister in the previous Mahayuti government, relented due to the demand of the party leaders, he said.  "Eknath Shinde was not interested in becoming deputy CM.  Party MLAs and leaders insisted that he should be part of the government because it is his responsibility to ensure that the schemes he launched are taken forward," Samant told reporters.
After the swearing-in ceremony on Thursday, Shinde spoke to Shiv Sena leaders at the party office, he said.  "He told us he wanted to build the organisation but honoured our request," Samant said.  Devendra Fadnavis was sworn in as chief minister on Thursday while Shinde and NCP chief Ajit Pawar took oath as his deputies, two weeks after the BJP-led Mahayuti coalition won a massive victory in the assembly elections.

A federal appeals court panel on Friday unanimously upheld a law that could lead to a ban on TikTok in a few short months, handing a resounding defeat to the popular social media platform as it fights for its survival in the US.
The US Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit denied TikTok's petition to overturn the law  which requires TikTok to break ties with its China-based parent company ByteDance or be banned by mid-January  and rebuffed the company's challenge of the statute, which it argued had ran afoul of the First Amendment.
The First Amendment exists to protect free speech in the United States, said the court's opinion, which was written by Judge Douglas Ginsburg. Leading cement maker UltraTech Cement has received a notice from the fair trade regulator CCI over its proposed acquisition of the South-based India Cements Ltd.
UltraTech Cement, in a regulatory filing, said it has received notice from the Competition Commission of India (CCI), and the Aditya Birla group flagship firm is confident in the merits of its case.
"The Company has received a communication from the Competition Commission of India under Section 29 (1) of the Competition Act, 2002, regarding the proposed acquisition of The India Cements Ltd. The Company will be responding to the same," said UltraTech.
The southern market for grey cement, where India Cements primarily operates, is highly competitive and fragmented, with the presence of over 35 grey cement manufacturers.

A special three-day session of the newly-constituted 288-member Maharashtra legislative assembly began here on Saturday, where MLAs will be administered the oath of office.
Senior BJP MLA Kalidas Kolambkar on Friday took oath as a legislator and was then appointed pro-tem speaker of legislative assembly by Governor C P Radhakrishnan.
A nine-time MLA, Kolambkar is the senior most legislator in the House and represents the Wadala assembly constituency in Mumbai.
As pro-tem speaker, he will administer the oath of office to the rest of the 287 newly-elected MLAs.  The assembly speaker's election will be held on December 9, which will be followed by a trust vote of the Devendra Fadnavis-led government and the governor's address to the joint sitting of both the houses of the state legislature. Coming out strongly against the Union Government's stance that the Viability Gap Fund (VGF) for the Vizhinjam Seaport project should be repaid in installments, Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan on Monday accused the Centre of maintaining a vindictive attitude towards the state.
Addressing the media here, the Chief Minister said that, in a letter responding to the state's request to reconsider the decision on the VGF, Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman had reiterated the Central Government's stance that the allocation for Vizhinjam should be treated as a loan, not a grant.
The Chief Minister criticised the decision, calling it a deviation from the Central Government's long standing policy on VGF grants.
Even when VGF was allocated for the Kochi Metro, there was no stipulation for repayment, and the new criteria set exclusively for Kerala contradict the standard guidelines of the VGF, he alleged.

The Haj quota of India for 2025 is fixed by Saudi Arabia at 1,75,025 pilgrims and has been distributed between the Haj Committee of India (HCoI) and Haj Group Organisers (HGO), the government informed the Rajya Sabha on Monday.
In a written reply to a question in the Upper House of Parliament, Minority Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju said that for the year 2025, the quota has been distributed within the same range between HCoI and HGOs, in the ratio of 70:30, which has been communicated vide the Haj Policy-2025 issued on August 5, 2024.
For Haj 2025, the quota of Haj pilgrims allotted to HGOs is 30 per cent of India's total of 1,75,025, i.e. 52,507, he said.
The allotment of Haj quota and Haj Group Organisers related terms and conditions are governed by a bilateral agreement which is signed between India and Saudi Arabia factoring many ground realities into account, Rijiju said.
