US retail giant Walmart has increased its stake in Indian e-commerce subsidiary Flipkart as it paid USD 3.5 billion (around Rs 28,953 crore) to acquire shares from its non-controlling interest holders in six months to July 31, 2023.
Additionally, during the six months ended July 31, 2023, the company received USD 700 million related to new rounds of equity funding for the company's majority-owned PhonePe subsidiary, said the Bentonville-based retailer in a US Securities & Exchange Commission (US SEC) filing.
"During the six months ended July 31, 2023, the company paid USD 3.5 billion to acquire shares from certain Flipkart noncontrolling interest holders and settle the liability to former noncontrolling interest holders of PhonePe," said Walmart filing.
After this, Walmart's total holding in the Indian e-commerce player Flipkart would increase to 80.5 per cent, some reports said.

Area under coverage for paddy has gone up about 4 per cent so far in the ongoing kharif sowing season to 398.08 lakh hectares, while pulses acreage declined 8 per cent, according to agriculture ministry data.
Paddy acreage stood at 383.79 lakh hectares (LH) in the same period last year.
The area under coverage for paddy has increased in Bihar by 5 lakh hectares, Chhattisgarh (4.66 LH), Jharkhand (1.82 LH), West Bengal (1.56 LH), Madhya Pradesh (1.48 LH), Haryana (1.29 LH), Uttar Pradesh (1.21 LH), Telangana (33,000 hectares) and Punjab (31,000 hectares).
Paddy acreage has declined in Karnataka by 1.67 LH and Andhra Pradesh by 1.21 LH.
As per data released on Friday, the area under coverage for pulses has declined by 8 per cent to 119.09 LH from 130.13 LH in the year-ago period.
The acreage of coarse cereals has increased marginally to 181.06 LH from 179.13 LH a year ago.
Oilseeds sowing is also down slightly to 190.11 LH so far as against 191.91 LH.

Coal India Ltd (CIL) on Friday posted a 13.2 per cent growth in its output at 52.3 million tonnes (MT) in August 2023 compared to 46.2 MT in the year-ago month.
The supplies rose to 59 MT in August 2023 from 51.2 MT in the same month last fiscal, registering a rise of 15.3 per cent, the company said in a statement. In FY2023-24 so far, the state-owned coal miner produced 281.5 MT, posting an 11.1 year-on-year growth.
During April-August 2023, total coal off-take rose by 8 per cent to 305.5 MT compared to 283.1 MT in the same period of the last year.
In August, the supplies to the power sector at nearly 47 MT increased by nearly 8 compared to 43.6 MT of the same month last year.
Against the commitment of 1.44 MT per day, the company supplied 1.515 MT per day to the power sector.
During April-August 2023, the coal-fired plants received 248.7 MT of coal from CIL, around 2 per cent higher from 243.5 MT a year ago.

There is no association between the Covid-19 vaccines used in India -- Covishield and Covaxin -- and increase in the risk of heart attacks, according to an observational study which emphasises the protective effect of the jabs.
The research, published recently in the journal PLOS One, determined the impact of COVID-19 vaccination on mortality following acute myocardial infarction (AMI) or heart attack.
The retrospective study used data from 1,578 people admitted to G B Pant hospital in Delhi between August 2021 and August 2022. As many as 1,086 (68.8 per cent) were vaccinated against COVID-19 while 492 (31.2 per cent) were unvaccinated.
Among the vaccinated group, 1,047 (96 per cent) had received two doses of the vaccine while 39 (4 per cent) had received only a single dose.
