Poland's leader said Saturday that he plans to temporarily suspend the right to asylum as part of a new migration policy, pointing to its alleged abuse by eastern neighbour Belarus and Russia.
Prime Minister Donald Tusk said that the state must regain 100 per cent of the control over who enters and leaves Poland, and that a territorial suspension of the right to asylum will be part of a strategy that will be presented to a Cabinet meeting on Tuesday, Polish news agency PAP reported.
He didn't give details, but said at a convention of his Civic Coalition that we will reduce illegal migration in Poland to a minimum."
Poland has struggled with migration pressures on its border with Belarus since 2021. Successive Polish governments have accused Belarus and Russia of luring migrants from the Middle East and Africa there to destabilise the West.

The Congress slammed the RSS after Mohan Bhagwat's annual Vijayadashami address on Saturday, alleging that the organisation wants to make the country uniform and asserting that it will not succeed in its plan.
Addressing the Vijayadashami rally of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) in Nagpur, Bhagwat criticised "cultural Marxists and woke people", accusing them of undermining education and culture, promoting conflict and disrupting social cohesion.
He said India has become stronger and more respected in the world with enhanced credibility in the last few years but sinister conspiracies are testing the country's resolve.
Asked about Bhagwat's address, the Congress's media and publicity department head, Pawan Khera, said the RSS chief seems very confused and wondered whether he is in favour of diversity or opposed to it.
"Whether he is opposing or supporting it, diversity is here. They have been trying to change it but they cannot change it," Khera said, hitting out at the RSS.

Textile manufacturer Alok Industries on Monday said its consolidated net loss widened to Rs 262.10 crore for the second quarter ended September 2024.
The company had posted a net loss of Rs 174.83 crore in the July-September period a year ago, according to a regulatory filing from Alok Industries, jointly owned by Reliance Industries and JM Financial Asset Reconstruction.
Its revenue from operation fell 35.46 per cent to Rs 885.66 crore during the period under review. It was Rs 1,372.34 crore in the corresponding period a year ago.
The total expenses in the September quarter declined 25.45 per cent to Rs 1,160.63
Alok Industries' total income, including other income, was down 34.97 per cent to Rs 898.78 crore in the September quarter.
Reliance Industries owns a 40.01 per cent stake and 34.99 per cent by JM Financial Asset Reconstruction Company in Alok Industries, which operates in-home textiles, cotton yarn, apparel fabric, garments, and polyester yarn.

In India, the percentage of organisations fully modernised with AI has surged from 8 per cent in 2023 to an impressive 25 per cent in 2024, marking a significant leap in operational efficiency and revenue generation, the report said.
The findings are based on a survey of 2,000 executives across 12 countries and 15 industries, including insights from 200 senior executives based in India.

Voting for bypolls on seven assembly seats in Rajasthan will be held on November 13, the results of which will be declared on November 23, according to the Election Commission of India.
At a press conference in New Delhi on Tuesday, Chief Election Commissioner Rajiv Kumar announced the schedule for bypolls in 48 assembly constituencies spread and two parliamentary constituencies spread across 15 states.
In Rajasthan, bypolls will be held in Jhunjhunu, Dausa, Deoli-Uniara, Khinvsar, Chaurasi, Salumbar and Ramgarh assembly seats.
Out of the seven seats on which bypolls are to be held, four of them were with the Congress.
Two of these by-elections are being held due to the deaths of the MLAs: Ramgarh's Congress MLA Zubair Khan and Salumbar's BJP MLA Amritlal Meena.
