The Los Angeles Times on Wednesday announced plans to cut 74 jobs due to economic challenges as the newspaper strives to transform itself into a digital media organization.
In a message to staff, Times Executive Editor Kevin Merida wrote that employees whose positions are eliminated from the Pulitzer Prize -winning newspaper were being notified and that a staff meeting was scheduled for Monday to answer questions.
We have done a vast amount of work as a company to meet the budget and revenue challenges head on. But that work will need acceleration and we will need more radical transformation in the newsroom for us to become a self-sustaining enterprise, Merida wrote.
The cuts will eliminate about 13% of newsroom positions and affect full-time and temporary workers including editors, audio producers and managers, the Times reported. The cuts follow a series of layoffs at news organizations including the Washington Post and NPR.
The move also comes days after journalists at two dozen

Rajasthan Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot on Wednesday said the whole country is worried over the "one-sided" action being taken by central probe agencies like the Central Bureau of Investigation and the Enforcement Directorate.
These agencies should do their work but the rule of law should prevail, he said.
His remarks came days after the ED conducted searches at multiple locations in Rajasthan on Monday in connection with a money laundering investigation into allegations of exam paper leaks for recruitment of teachers in the state.
"They (BJP government) send the ED before elections but we are not afraid. Let the ED do its work, we do not have any problem. The ED, the Income Tax department and the CBI should do their work but the rule of law should prevail," Gehlot told reporters at the Rajasthan Police headquarters here after holding a meeting to review the law and order in the state.

Jammu and Kashmir Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha has announced the government's decision to provide land and construct houses for the landless poor, adding that a notification will soon be issued in this direction.
He said the poor have the first right over the country's resources.
The announcement was made while Sinha was addressing a function at Garkhal border village panchayat in Akhnoor belt of Jammu district Tuesday evening.
"There was no provision to provide land to landless people by the government. We have removed regressive land laws and the government will now provide land to the landless as well as houses under PMAY scheme," he said.
The Lt Governor said the Centre has allotted additional 1,99,550 houses under the Pradhan Mantri Awaas Yojana-Gramin (PMAY-G).
"Of these, more than 19,000 houses are meant for Jammu district. This allocation will go a long way in achieving the objective of housing for all," he said.

Gitanjali Aiyar, one of India's first English female news presenters on national broadcaster Doordarshan, passed away on Wednesday.
She was in her mid 70s.
The award-winning anchor, who was suffering from Parkinson's disease, collapsed after returning home from a walk, sources close to the family said.
"She had Parkinson's disease and was on medication. She collapsed after returning home from a walk," said a close friend of Aiyar.
Graduated from Kolkata's Loreto College, Aiyar joined Doordarshan in 1971 and was awarded the best anchor four times. She also won the Indira Gandhi Priyadarshini Award for Outstanding Women in 1989.
Besides presenting news programmes, Aiyar, a diploma holder from the National School of Drama (NSD), had also been a popular face in several print advertisements and even acted in Sridhar Kshirsagar's TV drama "Khandaan".
In her decades-long illustrious career, she was also associated with the World Wildlife Fund (WWF).

The Delhi Police's Special Investigation Team (SIT) probing sexual harassment allegations against WFI chief Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh is likely to submit in the court its investigation report in the two cases registered against him by next week, officials said on Wednesday.
