An Indian national was on Wednesday charged here by federal prosecutors in connection with his participation in a foiled plot to assassinate a Sikh separatist on American soil.
Nikhil Gupta, 52, has been charged with murder-for-hire, which carries a maximum sentence of 10 years in prison, and conspiracy to commit murder-for-hire, which carries a maximum sentence of 10 years in prison, US Attorney for the Southern District of New York Matthew G. Olsen said.
US authorities said Gupta agreed to pay an assassin USD 100,000 to kill the Sikh separatist leader living in New York City.
"On or about June 9, 2023, CC-1 and GUPTA arranged for an associate to deliver USD 15,000 in cash to the UC in Manhattan, New York, as an advance payment for the murder," according to the charges.
The indictment has not named the US citizen but The Financial Times, citing unnamed sources, last week reported that US authorities thwarted a plot to assassinate banned Sikhs for Justice's Gurpatwant Singh Pannun,

The Election Commission (EC) must have the power to deregister a political party in case of a violation of the mandatory conditions for registration and for breach of laws, the Supreme Court has been told by a petitioner.
Fresh written submissions, seeking more punitive powers to the poll panel, have been filed by petitioner and advocate Ashwini Upadhyay ahead of a crucial hearing on his plea on Tuesday.
A three-judge bench, headed by Chief Justice D Y Chandrachud, is hearing pleas, including the one filed by Upadhyay, alleging that the pre-election promise of freebies by political parties is a corrupt practice and amounts to a "bribe" under the Representation of the People Act. The pleas have also said the EC should be empowered to effectively deal with this practice.

Markets regulator Sebi has issued a demand notice to Arun Panchariya, asking him to pay about Rs 26.25 crore in a case on manipulation of global depository receipts (GDRs) issuance by Hiran Orgochem Ltd.
In its notice issued on November 23, the regulator has also warned Panchariya of arrest and attachment of assets as well as his bank accounts if he fails to make the payment within 15 days.
The demand notice came after Panchariya failed to pay the fine imposed on him by the Securities and Exchange Board of India (Sebi) in July.
In its notice, Sebi directed Panchariya to pay Rs 26.25 crore, including interest and recovery costs, within 15 days.
In the event of non-payment of dues, the market watchdog will recover the amount by attaching and selling the moveable and immovable property of Panchariya.
Besides, he will also face attachment of his bank accounts and arrest.
In July, Sebi imposed a penalty of Rs 25 crore on Panchariya and Rs 20 lakh on Mukesh Chauradiya for manipulation

A six-week United Auto Workers strike at Ford cut sales by about 100,000 vehicles and cost the company USD 1.7 billion in lost profits this year, the automaker said Thursday.
Additional labour costs from the four-year and eight-month agreement will total USD 8.8 billion by the end of the contract, translating to about USD 900 per vehicle by 2028, Chief Financial Officer John Lawler said in a company release. Ford will work to offset that cost through higher productivity and reducing expenses, Lawler said.
The Dearborn, Michigan, automaker re-issued full-year earnings guidance that was withdrawn during the strike, but it trimmed its expectations. In a surprising turn of events, a Delhi court was on Thursday told that Rs 6 crore reportedly extorted by alleged conman Sanjay Prakash Rai alias Sanjay Sherpuria from Dalmia Family Office Trust, in which Gaurav Dalmia is a trustee, was part of the money that was allegedly embezzled by Dalmia from the Ansals.
The submission was made by Rai's lawyer during arguments on his bail application before Special Judge Sachin Gupta. The judge sought explanation from the Enforcement Directorate (ED) on this point by December 8 when the court will further hear the matter.
Advocate Nitesh Rana, appearing for the accused, submitted before the court that the ED itself was confused about the case.
Rana said that Rs 6 crore alleged proceeds of crime against Rai is part of money embezzled by Gaurav Dalmia from Ansal Properties and Infrastructure Ltd. and Ansal Landmark Township Ltd.  for which the ED in Lucknow has been investigating since 2022.
