Google on Tuesday said it would halt plans to develop a major USD 200 million data centre in Chile to address environmental grievances, a decision reflecting growing concerns about the impact of the power-thirsty projects around the world.
The US technology company first obtained permits in 2020 to construct the vast project in Chile's capital, Santiago, as demand for the server farms skyrocketed across the globe, fuelled by a surge in cloud-based technologies and a craze for generative AI.
But months after a Chilean court partially reversed the centre's authorisation over water usage concerns, Google announced Tuesday that it would revise the project to comply with more stringent environmental requirements and change its water-intensive cooling system.
A new process will start from scratch, Google said in its statement. Sustainability is at the heart of everything we do, and the way we design and manage our data centres is no exception.

US-based financial services company Vanguard Group on Friday bought shares of seven companies including Concord Biotech, Five-Star Business Finance and Marksans Pharma for Rs 998 crore through open market transactions.
Vanguard through its affiliates acquired shares of seven companies through separate bulk deals on the National Stock Exchange (NSE).
Vanguard picked up shares of Concord Biotech worth Rs 331 crore, acquired shares of Five-Star Business Finance for Rs 304.74 crore, purchased Marksans Pharma shares for Rs 158.39 crore and bought Genus Power Infrastructure shares for Rs 63.26 crore.
In addition, Vanguard also acquired Sansera Engineering shares for Rs 53 crore, purchased shares of VA Tech Wabag for about Rs 47 crore and picked up Arvind Fashions' shares for Rs 39.56 crore, as per the data on the NSE.
The shares were sold in the price range varying from Rs 316.85 - Rs 2,596.08 apiece, taking the combined transaction value to Rs 997.75 crore.

Delhi Environment Minister Gopal Rai said on Friday the Winter Action Plan to reduce pollution in the city in the coming months with steps like the odd-even scheme and artificial rain will be released on September 27.
According to a statement, the government, for the first time,  will use drone technology this year to monitor pollution at 13 identified hotspots across Delhi.
"The Winter Action Plan, set to be unveiled on September 27, targets pollution hotspots, vehicle and dust pollution, industrial emissions, and introduces innovative emergency measures such as the odd-even vehicle scheme and artificial rain to combat severe pollution spells," it said.
The plan, based on 21 key focus points, was prepared following a meeting between the Environment Department and the Delhi Pollution Control Committee (DPCC) that was chaired by Delhi Environment Minister Gopal Rai at the Secretariat on Friday.
