The US State Department announced new sanctions on Russian state media Friday, accusing a Kremlin news outlet of working hand-in-hand with the Russian military and running fundraising campaigns to pay for sniper rifles, body armour and other equipment for soldiers fighting in Ukraine.
While the outlet, RT, has previously been sanctioned for its work to spread Kremlin propaganda and disinformation, the allegations announced Friday suggest its role goes far beyond influence operations. Instead, Secretary of State Antony Blinken said, RT is a key part of Russia's war machine and its efforts to undermine its democratic allies.
RT has also created websites posing as legitimate news sites to spread disinformation and propaganda in Europe, Africa and elsewhere, officials said. They say the outlet has also expanded its use of cyber operations with a new unit with ties to Russian intelligence.

Group of 20 leaders agreed Friday to join efforts to fight disinformation and set up an agenda on artificial intelligence as their governments struggle against the speed, scale and reach of misinformation and hate speech.
The ministers, who gathered this week in Maceio, the capital of the northeastern state of Alagoas, emphasised in a statement the need for digital platforms to be transparent and in line with relevant policies and applicable legal frameworks.
It is the first time in the G20's history that the group recognises the problem of disinformation and calls for transparency and accountability from digital platforms, Joo Brant, secretary for digital policy at the Brazilian presidency, told The Associated Press by phone.
G20 representatives also agreed to establish guidelines for developing artificial intelligence, calling for ethical, transparent, and accountable use of AI, with human oversight and compliance with privacy and human rights laws.

Union minister Nitin Gadkari has said a political leader once offered to support him if he were to enter the race for the Prime Minister's post, but he declined the offer stating he did not nurse such an ambition.
The senior BJP leader was speaking at a journalism awards function in Maharashtra's Nagpur city on Saturday.
"I remember one incident -- I would not name anyone -- that person said 'if you are going to become prime minister, we will support you'," Gadkari said, without specifying when the conversation took place.

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Saturday made a surprise visit to the site where the junior doctors were protesting, and assured them that she would look into their demands and take action if anyone was found guilty.
Addressing the protesting doctors amid chants of 'we want justice' outside the Swasthya Bhawan in Salt Lake, Banerjee said she was spending sleepless nights as the medics were agitating on the road amid rains.
"I came to meet you as your 'didi' not as the chief minister," she said.
"I assure you that I will study your demands and take action if someone is found guilty," she added, urging the protesting doctors to return to work.
She also announced that patient welfare committees of all state-run hospitals were dissolved with immediate effect.
"This is my last attempt to resolve the crisis," Banerjee said.
After the chief minister left the site, the agitating doctors said they were not ready to compromise on their demands till discussions were held.

The agriculture and allied sectors in Tripura suffered a loss of Rs 2,024 crore due to floods across the state in August, a senior official said on Monday.
Altogether, 36 people lost their lives, while over one lakh people were rendered homeless due to the deluge between August 19 and August 24.
The final assessment conducted in different areas of the state revealed that the total loss in the agriculture and allied sectors stands at Rs 2024 crore out of which agriculture itself suffered a loss of Rs 1,284 crore, Secretary of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare, Apurba Roy, said at a press conference here.
He said a total of 2.66 lakh farmers have been affected by the floods, while crop area spreading around 1.03 lakh hectares were damaged.
