The 77 people who went missing in the flash flood in Sikkim have been presumed dead as they could not be found even after two months of the disaster, Chief Secretary VB Pathak said on Saturday.
To help their families get various kinds of benefits, including ex-gratia, it has been decided to follow the procedure adopted during natural disasters in Uttarakhand and Himachal Pradesh, and settle the matter, he told reporters.
A total of 77 people went missing in the flash flood that struck the state on October 4. Two bodies were later found, but their identities could not be ascertained, he said.
The state government is providing ex-gratia assistance of Rs 4 lakh, while Rs 2 lakh is being provided from the Prime Minister's Relief Fund.
"We have decided to adopt the procedures followed in Uttarakhand and Himachal Pradesh to settle the matter of missing persons," Pathak said.
The families will be able to avail of the benefits only after the issuance of the death certificates, he said.

The figure was announced on Saturday by ministry spokesman Ashraf al-Qidra, who did provide further details.
The previous toll given by the ministry was more than 13,300 dead. Al-Qidra did not explain the sharp jump. However, the ministry had only been able to provide sporadic updates since November 11, amid problems with connectivity and major war-related disruptions in hospital operations.

Denim brand Pepe Jeans London is aiming for sales of around Rs 2,000 crore from the Indian market and plans to expand its retail network by adding over 100 stores in the next three years, its India MD and CEO Manish Kapoor said.
Pepe Jeans London, owned by Spanish global fashion group AWWG, is "very buoyant" for the Indian market, and aims to grow at 18-20 per cent compound annual growth rate (CAGR) in the next three to five years, Kapoor told PTI.
As part of the strategy, Pepe Jeans is now focusing on the expansion of its network of brand stores and fast-growing e-commerce channels. Pepe Jeans expects 55 per cent of its business to come directly by selling to consumers from its own sales channels.
Over Pepe Jeans' expansion plans, Kapoor told PTI, "We will add 100 odd stores in the next three years and in terms of a turnover, we are looking at a CAGR growth of 18 to 20 per cent. So we should be almost around Rs 2,000 crore of consumer sales in three years."

Inspector General (IG) of the BSF D K Boora affirmed on Tuesday that the force successfully maintained peace along the International Border (IB) in the Jammu frontier and said no infiltration was reported along the border with Pakistan in the past year.
He said there has been a significant decrease in the number of drone-dropping incidents.
"There was no infiltration along the IB in the past one year. There have been two to three attempted infiltrations, all neutralised in successful operations. Vigilant troops thwarted three Pakistani smugglers attempting to violate the IB to smuggle narcotics into the Indian territory," Boora told reporters here.
Regarding drone activities, he said there has been a notable decline in such incidents over the past year. He attributed this to the dismantling of a drone-based smuggling network earlier in the year.
