    Magnus Carlsen, the new World Chess Champion, was today awarded his championship trophy and a sum amount of Rs 9.9 crores from the Tamil Nadu government as prize money along with a laurel wreath.

    Vishwanathan Anand was on November 7th defeated by the 22-year old Norwegian, Magnus Carlsen, The last 10th game (out of 12 possible) finished in a draw after 65 moves of play and Carlsen accumulated the necessary 6,5 points to claim the title.

    Vishwanathan Anand was awarded prize money of Rs 6.3 crore by Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J Jayalalitha today along with a shield for securing the second place. The match was sponsored by the Tamil Nadu Government, which allocated Rs 29 crore for the Championship, and organised by FIDE and AICF.
