CWG 2014: Grand opening

    Ace shooter Vijay Kumar holds the Tricolour as he leads the Indian contingent at Celtic Park during the opening ceremony of Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, Scotland. India will start their Pool A campaign against Canada July 24 before taking on New Zealand July 27, Trinidad and Tobago July 28 and South Africa July 30. The top two teams from both the groups will proceed to the semi-finals. Indian women won the gold in 2002 Manchester and settled for the silver four years later at Melbourne. They failed to win a medal at home in 2010.

  • Commonwealth Games, Boxing

Olympic bronze medallist Vijender Singh will lead the Indian boxing contingent at the Commonwealth Games to be held in Glasgow from July 23 to Aug 3. Eight men and three women have been selected in various weight categories by the Adhoc Committee Boxing. The contingent has reached the Scottish capital.

India’s largest food products marketing organisation Amul announced on July 11 its sponsorship of the Indian contingents to the Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games and Asian Games, Incheon, South Korea by signing a MoU with the Indian Olympic Association (IOA). The ‘Taste of India’ brand had earlier sponsored the Netherlands cricket team in the ICC Cricket World Cup in 2011, the Switzerland-headquartered Sauber F1 team at the inaugural Indian Grand Prix as well as the Indian contingent at the London 2012 Olympic Games.
