Mario Gotze: Germany's 'boy wonder'

Twenty two year old Mario Götze has suddenly become a household name. After all the Bayern Munich attacking midfielder was the difference between Germany and Argentina in the Fifa World Cup 2014 final.

He came on as a substitute in extra time and scored a beautiful goal in the 113th minute to help Germany win their fourth golden cup.

According to The Telegraph, Joachim Löw described Gotze as a “boy wonder” who has the technical skills to play in any position on the pitch. “I said to him, 'show to the world you are better than Messi’,” said Löw. “I had a good feeling that he can play in any position.”

Gotze is considered to be an up-and-coming player possessing high speed, excellent technical and dribbling skills, and play-making capabilities. 

Götze played for Borussia Dortmund between 2009 and 2013, winning the Bundesliga title in 2010–11 and the Bundesliga and DFB-Pokal double in 2011–12. He was also a member of the team which reached the 2013 UEFA Champions League Final.

In April 2013, a 37 million pound bid from Bayern Munich triggered a release clause in Götze's contract, making Götze the second-most expensive German player to date, behind Mesut Özil. 

A leading Brazilian news website, globo.com said, “Mario Götze comes off the bench and makes the only goal to the delight of Brazilian fans and frustration of Argentine in Rio.”

German coach Joachim Loew has said he told Mario Goetze "to show you can decide the World Cup" minutes before the attacker's title-clinching strike in the FIFA World Cup final.
