When is World Hypertension Day?

Every year, World Hypertension Day is observed on May 17 to raise awareness about the condition of hypertension in patients. Even though hypertension has now become a common problem, the awareness about this disease among patients is really low.
What is Hypertension?

Hypertension is a condition in which, the force of the blood against the walls of the arteries is too high. Hypertension is usually understood as blood pressure levels that are above the 140/90 level and it is considered severe if the level is 180/120. Usually, hypertension or high blood pressure does not have any symptoms but if it is left untreated for far too long, it can actually lead to diseases like heart conditions and stroke.

Hypertension is a common problem that most senior citizens face, however, with increasing work pressure and a sedentary lifestyle, many youngsters are also prone to hypertension.

Why is World Hypertension Day celebrated?

World Hypertension Day came into existence in the year 2005 by the World Hypertension League. World Hypertension League is an umbrella organisation of 85 national hypertension societies. Since then, May 17 has been observed as World Hypertension Day. Each year, World Hypertension Day is celebrated with a different theme and the need to educate patients about hypertension has only increased in the Covid pandemic. Through this annual observance, the World Hypertension League sheds light on the importance of early diagnosis of hypertension in order to avoid severe consequences.

How to avoid hypertension?

Experts suggest that exercising regularly can help in maintaining blood pressure levels. Along with exercising, a healthy and balanced diet can go a long way in keeping the diseases at bay. It is imperative to note that people should not stop their hypertension medicines on their own, once it goes back to the normal level. This is only going to worsen the situation for the patients and a physician must be consulted.
