Who is Akshata Murty?

Akshata Narayan Murty is a UK-based businesswoman, fashion designer and venture capitalist. Murty is the wife of UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak and is the daughter of Indian businessman and founder of Infosys, N R Narayan Murty and Sudha Murty. Akshata holds a 0.93 per cent stake in India-based IT company Infosys, which makes her one of the wealthiest women in the UK. 

Early life and education

Akshata was born in Karnataka's Hubli in April 1980. She has been raised by her maternal grandparents in a simple middle-class upbringing in Jayanagar. She has one brother, Rohan Murty. Akshata did her schooling at Baldwin Girls' High School. She has studied economics and French at California's Claremont McKenna College. 

She has also done her diploma in clothes manufacturing from the Fashion Institute of Design & Merchandising and a master's in business administration from Stanford University. 

Akshata met Rishi Sunak at Stanford University and the two got married in 2009. The couple has two daughters, two daughters, Anoushka and Krishna, together. 

Career

Akshata joined cleantech firm Tendris as marketing director in 2007. She left the firm two years later to start her own fashion label, which closed in 2012. 

She became the director of venture capital fund Catamaran Ventures in 2013 and also co-founded the London branch of Infosys with Sunak. 

Sunak transferred his shares of Infosys to Akshata after being elected as the Conservative MP for Richmond in 2015. Akshata owns nearly 0.93 per cent shares, valued at around £700 million in April 2022, of Infosys.

Akshata also has shares in Wendy's in India and Koro Kids. She is also a director of Digme Fitness, and digital transformation company Soroco, which is co-founded by Rohan Murty.
