February 24, 2016: The Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation (MSRDC) has signed an MoU with Mahindra & Mahindra and road safety NGO Save Life Foundation (SLF) to transform the Mumbai-Pune expressway into a zero fatality corridor over the next three to four years.

The other collaborators include the Maharashtra Highway Police, IRB Infrastructure, DY Patil University, Ogilvy, JP Research and several hospitals including those in the vicinity of the expressway.

Eknath Shinde, minister of public works, and Vijay Deshmukh, minister of state for public works launched the initiative, which will focus on improving the four Es of road safety – engineering, emergency care, enforcement and education.

“MSRDC is committed to create the safest roads in India,” said R L Mopalwar, managing director and vice chairman of MSRDC. “We invite public support in this initiative by ensuring that they drive safely along the expressway.”

Added Veejay Ram Nakra, senior vice president, sales & customer care, automotive division, Mahindra & Mahindra: “"Road safety can improve when each component of the system, including the vehicle, road infrastructure, traffic engineering, driver training, road etiquette as well as the laws that govern motoring place safety above everything."

The project hopes to become an exemplary model that others can follow.
