The International Vessel Operators Dangerous Goods Association Inc (IVODGA), an international organisation of ocean common carriers in the shipping industry, has entered a partnership with Chennai-based Tirwin Management Services (P) Ltd, India, to offer its training in the region.

The partnership would provide the IVODGA with training in the International Maritime Dangerous Goods (IMDG) Code in South Asia.

IVODGA Administrator and Chief Technical Officer, John Currie, said: “Global compliance of the regulations for the safe and efficient transport of dangerous goods is a critical issue for our members to ensure the safety of our mariners and our ships at sea."

As exports from South Asia continue to rise, it is important that offerors and transporters of dangerous goods understand and comply with the regulations. The partnership is expected to bring additional IMDG training resources to India and neighbouring countries.

Tirwin is into training and consulting and has the regulatory approval and IATA accreditation for providing Dangerous Goods Regulations Training. It caters to the air cargo market.

However, as there are no established standards or any framework in maritime training, unlike in the air mode, Tirwin said that it was looking for opportunities to partner with a global leader in maritime training, and found IVODGA as having been recognised by global vessel operators.
