Google Pixel 2 XL: A strong 'nexus'

Priced at Rs 73,000, Pixel 2 XL is probably the only smartphone right now to boast a mammoth 6-inch AMOLED screen and dual stereo speakers

The next-generation Pixel smartphones from the stable of Google offers nothing spectacular in terms of design. But do not let the looks deceive you. The smartphones have a lot in store for everyone, starting from incredible imaging prowess to blazing-fast performance.

Soon after the India launch, I got hold of the Pixel 2 XL. The smartphone is a delight to use, especially with all the machine-learning processes that run in the backdrop. Theoretically, the difference can’t be measured but as you spend more and more time with the device, you notice how it gets accustomed to your usage patterns.

The Pixel 2 XL is probably the only smartphone right now to boast a mammoth 6-inch AMOLED screen in 18:9 aspect ratio and dual stereo speakers. The side bezels are minimal but the top and bottom bezels are considerably bigger than what the competition is offering. But none of the other devices have the powerful front-facing stereo speakers to justify the bezels.

Coming to the imaging department, the Pixel 2 XL takes a bold move to not sport a dual-camera setup, which most of the current year flagships boast. The phone has a 12-megapixel shooter capable of capturing incredible pictures, including portrait shots that can easily match the quality of dual-camera phones.

The Qualcomm Snapdragon 835 processor coupled with 4 GB RAM ensures flagship breed performance with no visible lag or stutter. The only downside in the phone is the lack of a 3.5 mm audio jack and microSD card slot.

Overall, the Pixel 2 XL is a solid contender and a worthy upgrade over the yesteryear’s Pixel XL smartphone. But, the hefty price tag of Rs 73,000 for the base 64GB variant could play spoilsport for some.
