Indian Institute of Packaging to set up testing lab in Bangalore

Indian Institute of Packaging (IIP), an autonomous body under the ministry of commerce, is setting up its fifth branch and testing laboratory for various packaging products like plastic, metal and jute packaging material in Bangalore.

The Bangalore branch will offer a two-year post-graduate course on packaging technology among others. It will also provide testing facility free of charge to its over 1,000 members.

“The institute is involved in various activities like testing and quality evaluation, training, education, consultancy services, R&D among others in other centers. This is the first time, the institute is looking to expand in Karnataka. We want to offer similar services to the packaging industry in the state,” Vimal Kedia, governing body member, IIP said.

He said Karnataka government has allotted four acres land at Sompura Industrial Estate in Dobaspet near Bangalore to IIP to set up the institute free of cost. The initial cost of setting up packaging institute in Bangalore would be Rs 5 crore, of which Rs 50 lakh would come from the Central government, he said.

The main objective of IIP is to promote the export market by way of innovative package design and development and a l so to upgrade the standards of packaging at national level.

Its head office and principal laboratory is located at Mumbai and its branches are in Delhi, Kolkata, Chennai and Hyderabad. The Institute provides various facilities to its members like Testing and Quality Evaluation, Training & Education, Consultancy services, Research & Development related to packaging industry.
 
IIP has  been    r ecognised among the global packaging community as a National Institute in the field of packaging education as about 150 students are awarded the P ost Graduate Diploma every year and all of them are well placed at various FMCG companies in India and abroad.
 
The  Institute  has  got  close  rapport  with  the  International  organisations  like World Packaging  Organization  (WPO),  Asian   Packaging  Federation  (APF),   International Association of Packaging Research Institutes (IAPRI) etc . In the recent days, the Institute has conducted a number of residential training programmes at lIP , Mumbai for the SAARC countries and also for the WPO member countries on the latest trends and technology  for  the benefit of global packaging community.
