Infosy's today finally announced salary hikes sending cheers among 153,761 employees. But painted a gloomy picture for engineering aspirants planning to join the industry by hiring 6,000 students, a sharp drop from 19,000 done last year.

Infosys has also decided to reduce the number of colleges it visits for campus hiring. "If needed more hiring will be done through off-campus," said Nandita Gurjar, Head, Human Resources, Infosys.

Meanwhile, the Bangalore-based software services provider has decided to promote about 12,000 people with effect from January 2013. This is the second time in the year the company announcing its promotion plan. In the first quarter of FY13, ended June Infosys has declared promotion for 20,000 people.

“We have a biannual promotion cycle and are planning to promote 12,000 more people in the January-April period,’ said Gurjar.

Infosys which has deferred compensation hike for the employees in the last quarter has decided to give a wage hike with effect from October. The company today announced a salary hike of 6% for people located in India (offshore) and 2-3 per cent for employees onsite.

Employees at the onsite location like the US must wait for another two months till January 1, 2013 to get the salary hike, while their Indian counterparts will receive the new salary from October 1, 2012.

“We are happy that the company gave hike us hike. The percentage is low but it is always better to get something than nothing,” a group of employees told Business Standard.

Infosys is the only company among its peers who had deferred wage hike. In June the company decided not to give wage hike to employees citing the market condition. In 2009 also the company had deferred wage hike and paid it in the middle of the year.

During the quarter the company made a net addition of 2,610 people taking its total head count to 1,54,761 people at the end of September 30, 2012.
