Jindal Stainless (JSL) today said it has got an order worth around Rs 35 crore for supplying 1,100 tonnes stainless steel to International Thermonuclear Experimental Reactor's cryostat project.

Cryostat is a large-scale scientific experiment that strives to produce commercial energy from fusion. The reactor is being constructed at Cadarache, France.

"We are very excited about this project and well-equipped in all respects to supply the desired quantity of stainless steel. We have already begun supplies," said Pankaj Mittal, Sr VP (Marketing & Supply Chain), JSL said in a statement today.

Out of the total 3,650 tonnes stainless steel to be used for making the reactor, JSL would supply 1,100 tonnes, valued at around Rs 35 crore, in the first phase. France's Indu steel is the other company chosen to supply the high-end steel, JSL said.

Indian firm Larsen & Toubro (L&T) got the order in 2012 to manufacture and install the ITER's cryostat for the world's largest experimental thermo-nuclear fusion reactor. L&T would manufacture the modules in its Hazira facility.

The project is being funded and run by seven-member entities - European Union, India, Japan, China, Russia, South Korea and the US.

"Based on JSL's credentials along with company's standard QAP, an audit was conducted of systems/processing systems /heat treatment at its Jajpur stainless steel plant and it was found that the plant plant has capability to meet stringent technical requirement for the nuclear industry," JSL said.
