1.5 lakh students appear for JEE Advanced exam

The Joint Entrance Examination (JEE) Advanced examination was taken by 1.5 lakh engineering aspirants today. These candidates have appeared for JEE Advanced for admission to the Indian Institute of Technology (IITs) and Indian School of Mines (ISM), Dhanbad.

 

The JEE-Advanced was conducted in 95 cities across India and one overseas centre at UAE. This is the maiden year of this exam being conducted, after the change in the IIT admission process by the Human Resource Development Ministry last year.  Out of 1.4 million candidates who has registered for JEE-Main examination, only the top 1,50,000 students were eligible for taking JEE Advanced examination for nearly 9700 seats. JEE Advanced was an offline examination. 

 

Coaching institutes said that the Chemistry paper was tough to solve. Ajay Antony, Course Director, JEE Training at coaching institute Triumphant Institute of Management Education (TIME) said that students felt that the Physics questions were easier than they expected, whereas Chemistry was little difficult in Paper 1. However, he added that students felt Physics was more difficult in Paper 2. 

 

Some test preparatory institutes also felt that the number of questions carrying negative marking was much higher than previous years. Chandan Dikshit, Planning & Strategy Head at Rao IIT Academy said that this year there were 65-75 per cent questions with negative marking. He added that the average figure in the last three years has been 30-34 per cent. Further, he said that there was negative marking in multiple choice and single choice questions as well. Dikshit opined that considering the level of difficulty, the topper of JEE Advanced would be able to score in the range of 260-280, with an average of 73 per cent. 

 

Ajith Kumar B, a student who appeared for the examination in Kolkata said that the Mathematics paper was difficult. "I was not able to attempt four questions as I felt that the paper was lengthy. But Physics in Paper 1 was unusually simple," he said.

 

JEE is a gateway for candidates aspiring to seek admissions to Bachelors in Engineering, B Tech and architecture courses at the Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs), National Institutes of Technology (NITs), Indian Institutes of Information Technology (IIITs), Delhi Technological University, and other centrally funded technical institutes (CFTIs).

 

With the two-tier exam process that has been announced, students who were among 1,50,000 candidates in JEE (Main) will be eligible to appear for JEE (Advanced) provided they fall in the Top 20 percentile in their respective boards. 

 

Currently there are 9647 undergraduate seats in 15 IITs, IT-BHU and ISM Dhanbad while the number of undergraduate seats in the 30 NITs of the country is 15,678 including the seats in the new ones. The results of the JEE Advanced exam will be declared on Jun 23, 2013.
