On Wednesday, the Air Quality Index of Delhi-NCR region continued to be in the ‘very poor’ category with the PM2.5 level at 308. Apart from the seasonal stubble burning in neighbouring states, this is also the season when fire cracker burning worsens the already polluted air in the capital region. Coupled with drop in temperature, the cumulative result is severe health implications on the residents. This year, novel Coronavirus has exacerbated the risk of respiratory diseases. LocalCircles, a community social media platform, has conducted a survey in Delhi-NCR to check if people would be wary of fire crackers this season. The survey also asked citizens about effectiveness of the GRAP regulations for curbing air pollution. GRAP or ‘Graded Response Action Plan’ was formulated in 2016 following a Supreme Court order and kicks in when air quality goes below moderate level. Shreya Jai collates city-wise data on response on fire crackers and components of the GRAP plan. While the citizens are positive about ban on fire crackers, three-fourth of residents are disappointed at the implementation of several plans under GRAP.
