R K Laxman, voice of the Common Man, dies at 94

The world-renowned caricaturist who created the Common Man breathed his last in Pune

Cartoonist R K Laxman who animated the famous 'protagonist' Common Man has died. He was 94.

Lately, Laxman was hospitalised with life threatening condition battling which the world-renowned cartoonist died. On Sunday, his condition worsened after which he was put on life support.

He was admitted to Deenanath Mangeshkar hospital in Pune on January 17 under critical condition. He had urinary tract infection and signs of a kidney failure.

Laxman was the younger brother to R K Narayan who authored the fictitious Malgudi Days that was adapted into a TV series aired on India's national network, Doordarshan.

Laxman was born in Mysore on October 24, 1921. He was youngest among six sons.

His father was a headmaster. His creation Common Man occupied a central place in a leading national English daily till a few years back when the newspaper decided to take it off its page.
