Dense fog in Delhi: Flight operations suspended, trains delayed

Dense fog continued to engulf the national capital on Thursday, for a second consecutive day, bringing visibility to below 50 meters following which Delhi airport was compelled to suspend flight operations temporarily. The minimum temperature recorded at 11.9 degrees Celsius, two notches above the season's average.

Seven international flights and two domestic flights were delayed from Delhi's IGI airport. 

Confirming the development, Jet Airways tweeted, "Due to poor visibility because of fog at Delhi, we’re expecting delays on all arrivals and departures from Delhi airport".

Budget carrier Spicejet warned its passengers to cross check their flight status before leaving for the airport.

Movement of traffic in Delhi slowed down, especially on the Delhi-Noida and Delhi-Gurgaon expressways.

According to the weather office, the maximum temperature is likely to hover around 26 degrees Celsius and the humidity at 8.30 a.m. was 98 per cent.

On Wednesday 13 flights were diverted due to poor visibility at the Indira Gandhi International Airport and 50 north-bound trains were delayed.

According to railway officials, 50 Delhi-bound services from Patna, Ranchi, Howrah, Bhubaneswar and other places were affected due to the thick fog cover.

"This is the season's first fog cover...The skies are expected to remain clear during the day and the maximum temperature is expected to hover around 28 degrees Celsius," the official had said.

According to India Meteorological Department (IMD) fog cover in Delhi, Chandigarh, Haryana, Punjab, west Uttar Pradesh, West Bengal and Sikkim is likely to last six days.
