Ratan Tata has recently been awarded the Knight Grand Cross (GBE) by Queen Elizabeth in recognition for the work his group has done in the UK. Tata is the only Indian among five awarded as part of the 'Honorary British Awards to Foreign Nationals' for 2014. Earlier, he was conferred the Knight Commander by the Queen in 2009, a year after the Tata group acquired the flagging British luxury car brands JLR.
Chandrika Prasad, civil servant, diplomat and international administrator, was the only other Indian in the post-independence era to get the GBE, in 1990. The Knight Grand Cross is the Order of the British Empire awarded mainly to civilians and service personnel for public service or other distinctions and has military and civil divisions. The Most Excellent Order of the British Empire was established by King George V in June 1917 for services to the British Empire.
