Gujarat police has written to Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) to send back the 17 crew members, rescued on April 4 of a ship from Oman, to their respective countries.

In a letter written the ministry recently, police has asked to take up the matter of the crew members, 10 of them Pakistani, five from Yemen and one each from India and Iraq, with the concerned Embassies.

"As per procedures, we have written to the Ministry External Affairs to take up the matter with the Embassies of Pakistan, Yemen and Iraq for sending the crew members back to their respective countries," said P C Thakur, Director General of Police (DGP), Gujarat.

"We are awaiting instructions from the ministry in this regard," he added.

All the rescued members are being looked after well and are being provided with lodging and boarding facility at marine police station at Pipavav, Thakur said.

The Indian Coast Guard and the state marine police on Saturday had rescued them of the ship named Abdullah which sank about ten nautical miles from the Pipavav port in Gujarat's Amreli district when it was heading for Alang ship-breaking yard for dismantling.
