In a fresh development in the Volkswagen's emission testing controversy, Road Transport Minister Nitin Gadkari on Friday said the government was close to setting up a committee of experts drawn from the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) to analyse the issue. "The ministry (of road transport and highways) will be forming a committee of IIT experts. The committee will analyse the Volkswagen issue and submit the findings," he said at the sidelines of a Confederation of Indian Industries (CII) event here.
"The committee will be formed in a day. The report will be submitted within a month or two. A decision will be taken after that."
A probe ordered by the government had earlier found violations of emission norms on the part of the company by deploying a "defeat device" to cheat on emission tests. Volkswagen has said its cars sold in India were not fitted with the device and so did not violate BS-IV emission norms but it would start recall of 323,700 vehicles in the first quarter of 2016.
