India is working with neighbouring countries, including Myanmar and Bangladesh, to fight insurgency in the northeastern region, the Lok Sabha was informed on Tuesday.

Union Minister of State for Home Hansraj Ahir told the house: "There has been substantial decrease in incidents of violence in the northeast since 2012."

Ahir said there was no report of any foreign country providing financial or logistic help directly to insurgent groups.

But he said foreign arms and ammunition were being used by various groups.

"We are working in coordination with foreign countries. I do not say we have attained 100% success, but many camps run by Indian insurgent groups have been eradicated, especially in Bangladesh," Ahir said.

He was answering supplementary questions, including from Kalyan Banerjee (Trinamool Congress) and C K Sangma (National People's Party).

Sangma, MP from Meghalaya, wanted to know whether India was proposing any "joint operations" against Indian guerrilla groups operating from foreign soil.

Ashok Chavan of Congress wanted to know whether the government would sign an extradition treaty with Myanmar to get hold of senior Naga insurgent leaders in that country.
