Putin says Russian anti-aircraft forces 'cracking' enemy weapons 'like nuts'

Russian anti-aircraft forces have shot down dozens of Ukrainian weapons and are "cracking them like nuts," President Vladimir Putin said in a brief excerpt of an interview aired on Saturday.

 

RIA news agency, which first cited the comments, quoted Putin as responding to a question about U.S.-supplied arms by saying, Russia was coping easily and had already destroyed the weapons by the dozen.

 

But the clip of an an interview to be aired on Sunday made clear that Putin had in fact been responding to a different question, which was not shown.

Cumulative number of COVID-19 vaccine doses administered in India crosses 194 crore: Govt

The cumulative number of COVID-19 vaccine doses administered in the country crossed 194 crore on Saturday, the Union Health Ministry said.

 

More than 10 lakh vaccine doses were administered till 7 pm on Saturday, it said. The daily vaccination tally is expected to increase with the compilation of the final reports for the day by late night.

 

A total of 1,04,295 precaution doses of COVID-19 vaccine were administered to those aged 18-59 years till 7 pm on Saturday, taking the total number of precaution doses given in this age-group to 26,28,276 so far, according to the health ministry data.

Baby formula shortage could ease as Abbott reopens Michigan plant

Abbott Laboratories said on Saturday that it has reopened its baby formula production plant in Sturgis, Michigan, taking a step toward alleviating an acute nationwide shortage that has sent parents scrambling for supplies.

 

The company said it will begin production of EleCare and other specialty and metabolic formulas, with initial EleCare product release to consumers beginning on or about June 20.

 

The FDA said on May 19 that the plant was on track to open within one or two weeks.

Putin says Russia has destroyed US weapons in Ukraine by the dozen: Report

Russian President Vladimir Putin, in comments about a U.S. decision to send new arms to Ukraine, said Russia was easily coping and was already destroying American-supplied weapons by the dozen, state-run news agency RIA reported on Saturday.

 

Putin made the remarks in an interview with national television, RIA said. It is due to be shown on Sunday.

Kerala clocks 1,544 new Covid cases, minister holds meeting

Kerala on Saturday reported 1,544 new COVID-19 cases which took the number of active patients in the state to 7,972 prompting state Health Minister Veena George to call a high-level meeting to assess the situation.

 

For the past five days, Kerala has been reporting over 1,000 coronavirus cases each day and a total of 48 COVID-related deaths.

 

After the meeting, George said the health department was closely monitoring the situation and there was no new variants.

Maharashtra reports 1,357 Covid cases, one death

Maharashtra on Saturday reported 1,357 new coronavirus infections and one pandemic-related death, the state health department said.

 

The state had recorded 1,134 new infections and three deaths the day before.

 

This is the third consecutive day when the state reported more than 1,000 cases. The state has 5,888 active cases now.

Congo auditor says $400 mn went missing from state mining company

More than $400 million in tax advances and loans that Democratic Republic of Congo's state mining company Gecamines said it paid to the national treasury cannot be found, according to a report by the government's public finances watchdog.

 

State miner Gecamines holds minority stakes in several of the world's largest copper and cobalt projects, including Glencore's Kamoto Copper Company mine and China Molybdenum's Tenke Fungurume mine.

 

Gecamines has long been dogged by accusations of corruption made by non-governmental organisations and opposition politicians.

Russia says it shoots down Ukrainian military plane with weapons

Russia's defence ministry said on Saturday its forces shot down a Ukrainian military transport plane carrying weapons and munitions near the Black Sea port of Odesa.

 

The ministry said Russian missiles also struck an artillery training centre in Ukraine's Sumy region where foreign instructors worked. Another strike destroyed a "foreign mercenaries'" outpost in the Odesa region, it said.

Ukraine wants to bolster military position before resuming talks with Russia: Official

Ukraine wants to strengthen its positions on the ground with the help of new weapons deliveries from the West before it resumes peace talks with Russia, Ukrainian negotiator David Arakhamia said.

Pakistan PM Shehbaz asks ISI to screen govt officials, says report

Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has officially tasked the Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) to screen government officials before their induction, appointments and postings, as well as promotions, a media report said.

 

The Dawn news report said that in doing so, "the government has given legal cover to a practice that had already been in place, but had not been formalised as part of protocol".

 

In a notification, the Establishment Division said: "In exercise of powers conferred by sub-section 1 of section 25 of the Civil Servants Act 1973, read with notification No. SRO 120 (1)/1998, the Prime Minister is pleased to notify Directorate General Inter-Services Intel­ligence (ISI) asSpecial Vetting Agency (SVA) for verification and screening of all Public Office Holders (Officers Category)."

Canada confirms 58 cases of monkeypox

Canada has confirmed 58 cases of monkeypox, the country's Chief Public Health Officer Theresa Tam said.

Speaking to reporters at a health briefing, Tam said the confirmed cases have been reported nationally, including 52 cases from Quebec, five from Ontario and one from Alberta, reports Xinhua news agency.

She said the risk of exposure to monkeypox "isn't exclusive to any group or setting", warning that anyone could get infected and spread the virus if they come into close contact with an infected person or their contaminated objects.
